Subject: Overview of Alternative and Renewable Energy Policy, 2010

Abstract:

Alternative and Renewable Energy (ARE) is still in its infancy in Pakistan, a country with abundant ARE resources and grave electricity shortages. Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB), a federal entity was set up to promote renewable energy in Pakistan under a GOP Short term ARE Policy, 2006 and helped launch an extensive wind energy farming in the province of Sindh. Other ARE Technologies were also patronized by AEDB like off-grid mini wind and PV projects. Based on this initial experience, Policy 2006 is due to be replaced by a medium term policy framework of the GOP by Policy 2010 entailing renewed support and increased incentives for the private sector and other ARE applications in Pakistan. At present, Policy 2010 has been shared and discussed extensively with all stakeholders prior to its approval by AED Board due next month by mid November.
